Seattle business owners hope Club World Cup improvements become permanent

Downtown Seattle looked cleaner, safer, and more vibrant than it has in years during the recent FIFA Club World Cup, and local business owners are hoping the city doesn't let that momentum slip away. The influx of international soccer fans brought a surge of foot traffic to restaurants, bars, and shops, but it was the visible improvements to the public realm that caught many owners' attention.

Enhanced street lighting, increased police presence, and more frequent trash collection made the central business district feel like a different place. "It was the best the city has looked since before the pandemic," said one Capitol Hill restaurant owner. "We had people walking around at 10 p.m. without any issues. That's what we need year-round."

City officials deployed additional resources during the tournament, including extra sanitation crews and dedicated security patrols. Business owners say those temporary measures worked so well that they are now pushing for a permanent program. They argue that the city cannot rely on major sporting events alone to keep downtown clean and safe.

Some have proposed a special downtown improvement district funded by local businesses, similar to models used in other major U.S. cities. Others want the city to commit to maintaining the higher level of street cleaning and public safety staffing even after the crowds leave.

"We proved it can be done," said a bar owner near Lumen Field. "Now we need the city to treat every day like a game day." Without sustained investment, many worry the area will slip back into the cycle of litter, empty sidewalks, and safety concerns that have plagued downtown in recent years. For now, business owners are watching closely to see if the city will turn a temporary success into a lasting change.
