From bench to business: How I-Corps trains scientists for industry

The National Science Foundation's I-Corps program is reshaping how academic researchers bring their discoveries to the marketplace. Rather than leaving scientists to figure out business on their own, the program offers structured entrepreneurial training and real-world business research experience. The goal is straightforward: help researchers move their work beyond the laboratory and into society where it can actually make a difference.

Participants in I-Corps learn to test their ideas against market realities. They interview potential customers, identify viable applications for their technology, and develop business models that can sustain a startup. The program emphasizes hands-on learning over theory. Scientists who might have spent years perfecting a single experiment suddenly find themselves in coffee shops and offices, talking to strangers about what they actually need.

The results have been notable. Many teams that go through I-Corps end up launching companies, licensing their technology, or landing industry partnerships. The program also changes how researchers think about their own work. They start asking not just "does this work?" but "who would use this and why?"

NSF launched I-Corps in 2011, and it has since expanded to include sites at universities across the country. The training is intensive, often lasting several weeks, and requires a serious time commitment from participants. But for scientists who want to see their ideas have an impact beyond academic journals, the program offers a clear path from bench to business.
