A major radiology practice is betting that a targeted discount program can boost interest in its whole-body MRI scans. SimonMed Imaging, based in Tucson, Arizona, announced it will offer a 20% discount on its "longevity scans" to active-duty military personnel, veterans, and first responders. The move is an attempt to expand the customer base for a service that remains controversial among many medical professionals.
Whole-body MRI scans are marketed as a preventive tool, claiming to detect early signs of cancer, aneurysms, and other serious conditions before symptoms appear. Critics argue that such scans often produce false positives, leading to unnecessary biopsies, anxiety, and follow-up procedures. They also point out that no major medical organization recommends routine whole-body imaging for healthy people.
SimonMed, however, sees a growing market. By offering the discount to groups known for higher physical stress and potential exposure to environmental hazards, the company is trying to position the scans as a prudent health investment. The practice operates dozens of imaging centers across several states and has been aggressively promoting its longevity scan packages in recent years.
The discount applies to the standard scan price, which typically runs between $1,000 and $2,500 depending on the facility and the specific protocol. SimonMed did not specify an end date for the promotion. The company's CEO has previously stated that the scans are not intended to replace regular doctor visits but to provide an additional layer of screening for motivated patients.
For now, the offer is limited to those who can provide proof of military service, veteran status, or employment as a firefighter, police officer, or emergency medical technician.
