A flurry of basketball playoff games is delivering a significant economic boost to downtown Minneapolis. With the Minnesota Timberwolves making a deep postseason run and other events filling the calendar, local businesses are seeing a surge in customers.
Leah Beno of FOX 9 spoke with the President and CEO of the Minneapolis Downtown Council about the impact. The executive noted that each home game brings thousands of fans into the city center, filling restaurants, bars, and hotels. Many visitors come from out of town, spending money on dining, parking, and merchandise before and after the games.
The playoff season is also helping to change the perception of downtown Minneapolis. After several years of challenges, the steady flow of crowds is a welcome sign of recovery. Business owners report that game nights feel like a return to pre-pandemic energy, with streets busy and storefronts active well into the evening.
The Downtown Council estimates that the economic impact could reach tens of millions of dollars if the team continues to advance. Even beyond direct spending, the exposure from nationally televised games highlights the city as a destination for sports and entertainment. For now, local merchants are hoping the winning streak lasts as long as possible.
