A new campaign is set to encourage shoppers to put their money into Black-owned shops and restaurants during a two-week stretch later this month. The event, called the Black Wealth Crawl, runs from August 28 through September 7. During that window, anyone who makes a purchase at one of the participating businesses will be entered to win a $150 gift card, with additional raffle prizes up for grabs as well.
Organizers say the goal is simple: drive real foot traffic and sales to independent Black entrepreneurs, rather than just offering symbolic support. The crawl is designed to feel like a neighborhood treasure hunt, with shoppers hopping from store to store, collecting receipts, and discovering businesses they may not have visited before. Each qualifying purchase earns an entry into the prize drawing, so the more places a person shops, the better their odds.
Local business owners have signed on across a range of categories, including bookstores, clothing boutiques, cafes, and service providers. The hope is that the concentrated spending window will give these operations a noticeable boost at a time when many small shops are still recovering from slower summer months.
Beyond the raffle, the event also serves as a reminder of the broader wealth gap. Black-owned businesses often receive a fraction of the venture capital and small business loans that white-owned firms do, so every dollar spent locally can have an outsized impact. Organizers are encouraging people to bring friends and family, share their purchases on social media, and treat the crawl as a fun way to build community while supporting economic independence.
The prize drawing will take place after the event ends, with winners contacted directly. For those who want to take part, the full list of participating businesses is available on the event's official page. No purchase is required to enter the raffle, but only purchases made during the event window count toward the main prize.
