You vs you: The other side of when you almost decide not to go

You vs you: The other side of when you almost decide not to go

There is a quiet battle that happens long before the sun rises over the fields. It is not against the weather, the market prices, or the neighbor who seems to have a newer tractor. It is the fight between the version of you that stays in the warm kitchen and the version that loads the truck anyway. Most farmers know this feeling well. The morning when the forecast looks uncertain, the soil is still damp, or the cattle seem fine without another check. You almost decide not to go. And that is exactly where the real work begins.

Taking action, even when it feels pointless, does more than just finish a task. It increases what some call your luck surface area. That is a simple way of saying that the more places you show up, the more chances you give opportunity to find you. A conversation at the feed store, a quick look at a new fence post, or a handshake after a meeting can turn into a lead, a partnership, or a better way of doing something you have done for years. None of that happens from the driveway.

The other side of that almost decision is often where growth lives. When you push past the hesitation, you build a habit of momentum. That habit carries over into every part of the farm business, from bookkeeping to trying a new cover crop. You stop waiting for perfect conditions and start working with what you have. Over time, that shift in mindset is worth more than any single lucky break.

So the next time you feel the pull to stay back, remember that the biggest opponent is not the weather or the market. It is the voice that says today does not matter. It always does. Show up, and let the rest follow.
