Kurt Zellers out in shakeup at Minnesota Business Partnership

The Minnesota Business Partnership has parted ways with its president, Kurt Zellers, in a leadership shakeup that installs two co-interim CEOs from opposite sides of the political aisle. The lobbying group, which represents many of the state's largest employers, announced the change this week.

Taking over on an interim basis are a former state director for U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar and a longtime Republican aide. The move signals a deliberate effort to maintain bipartisan credibility as the organization navigates a divided state government and a contentious legislative session.

Zellers, a former Republican speaker of the Minnesota House, had led the partnership since 2020. His tenure saw the group push for business-friendly policies during the pandemic and the subsequent economic recovery. No specific reason was given for his departure, but sources familiar with the decision described it as a strategic reset.

The new co-leaders will share responsibilities, with one focusing on external advocacy and the other on internal operations. Their backgrounds are expected to help the partnership build bridges with both DFL and GOP lawmakers, especially as debates over taxes, workforce development, and energy policy heat up at the Capitol.

The Minnesota Business Partnership has historically wielded significant influence in St. Paul, representing companies like 3M, Target, and Medtronic. The dual-leadership model is seen as a temporary measure while the board searches for a permanent replacement.
