After years watching venture capital reshape American cities, Japanese entrepreneur Daisuke Fujii decided to take a different route. He left his corporate job and turned to agritourism as a way to keep rural Japan from fading away. His idea is simple: connect city dwellers with working farms, not just for a quick visit, but for real hands-on experiences that put money directly into farmers' pockets.
Fujii saw that many farmers in Japan have the land and the skill, but not the income. Traditional subsidies and crop sales are not enough to sustain them, especially as villages shrink and younger people move to urban centers. By opening their fields to tourists, farmers can earn extra cash from lodging, meals, and workshops. Visitors get a taste of rural life, and farmers get a financial lifeline.
His platform now works with dozens of farms across the country, offering everything from rice planting to fruit picking. The response has been strong, with many guests coming from Tokyo and Osaka looking for a weekend escape. Fujii says the goal is not to turn farms into theme parks, but to build a steady, respectful exchange that keeps the countryside alive. He believes that if more people see where their food comes from, they will care more about the people who grow it. For now, his team keeps expanding, one farm at a time.
