'It's rough': Uptown stores see sales drop amid streetscape project, with some temporarily closing

OKLAHOMA CITY -- A major streetscape project along NW 23rd Street in Oklahoma City's Uptown district is taking a heavy toll on local businesses, with some owners reporting sharp sales declines and a few temporarily closing their doors.

The construction, which aims to improve sidewalks, add bike lanes, and upgrade utilities, has created a maze of blocked lanes, dust, and limited parking. For shop owners already operating on thin margins, the disruption has been brutal.

"It's rough," said one business owner, describing the near-empty storefronts during what should be peak hours. "People don't want to navigate the construction to get here."

Several retailers have opted to close temporarily, hoping to reopen once the project finishes. Others are cutting hours or laying off staff. The situation has sparked frustration among merchants who say they were not given enough warning about the timeline or the extent of the disruption.

Community members have started a push to support affected businesses, urging shoppers to brave the construction and spend locally. Some stores are offering discounts or curbside pickup to make it easier.

City officials acknowledge the pain but argue the upgrades are necessary for long-term growth. They point to similar projects in other neighborhoods that eventually boosted foot traffic. For now, though, Uptown merchants are asking for patience and a little extra effort from regulars.

"Just come see us," one owner said. "We are still here, and we need you."
