Microsoft has officially switched the underlying model for Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise to GPT-5.3-Codex, effective March 18, 2026. This update replaces the previous GPT-4.1 base model, which had been in use since last year. The change applies to all organizations using these paid tiers, meaning that any request sent to Copilot without a specific model override will now default to the new GPT-5.3-Codex engine.
The shift marks a significant step forward in code generation and general reasoning capabilities. GPT-5.3-Codex builds on improvements in handling longer context windows, more accurate code completions, and better adherence to complex instructions. Early internal benchmarks suggest it reduces errors in multi-step programming tasks by a noticeable margin compared to its predecessor.
For enterprise users, this means Copilot will now offer more reliable suggestions across a wider range of programming languages and frameworks. The model also shows improved performance in debugging scenarios and refactoring existing codebases. While individual users on free or personal plans are not affected by this change, business and enterprise subscribers should see an immediate improvement in response quality and relevance.
Microsoft has not announced any pricing adjustments tied to this model upgrade. Organizations already on these plans will receive the new base model automatically without any configuration changes needed.
