Santa Cruz could lower speed limits near schools, business areas

Santa Cruz city leaders are set to discuss a plan that could reduce speed limits on streets near schools and commercial districts. The proposal comes as local data shows a troubling trend for cyclists and pedestrians.

In 2023, Santa Cruz County had the worst record in California for reported cyclist deaths and injuries, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. That statistic has pushed city staff to look for quick fixes that do not require major road construction.

The idea is to lower the default speed limit from 25 miles per hour to 20 miles per hour in specific zones. These would include areas around elementary and high schools, as well as busy corridors where people walk to shops and restaurants. Supporters say the change is simple and can save lives. Slower speeds give drivers more time to react, and they reduce the force of impact if a crash does happen.

The city council will hear the proposal at its meeting on Monday, Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Council Chambers, 809 Center Street. If the council approves the plan, the next step would be to install new signs and notify residents. Some business owners have raised concerns about slower traffic affecting delivery times, but city staff say the impact would be minimal.

The meeting is open to the public, and people can also submit comments online before the session begins. A final vote could come later this fall.
