Job seeker falls for re-shipping scam tied to Palm Bay business name

Job seeker falls for re-shipping scam tied to Palm Bay business name

A promising work-from-home position recently turned out to be a clever re-shipping scam that borrowed the name of a legitimate Palm Bay business. The job seeker, who has not been identified, applied for what looked like a standard logistics coordinator role. The offer promised flexible hours and decent pay, with duties that involved receiving packages at home, repackaging them, and sending them to other addresses.

The red flags started when the supposed employer asked for personal banking details before any formal contract was signed. The job seeker also noticed that the return addresses on the packages did not match the company's known warehouse location. After a quick check with the actual Palm Bay firm, it became clear that the business had no such open position and had never posted the listing.

Re-shipping scams like this are common. Criminals use stolen credit cards to buy goods online, then have them shipped to a middle person. That person repackages and forwards the items, often overseas, making it harder for police to trace the fraud. The middle person may not realize they are breaking the law, but they can still face charges.

Authorities in Brevard County are reminding residents to verify any remote job offer with the company directly. They also advise never sharing bank details or accepting packages from unknown employers. The Palm Bay business has posted a notice on its website warning that it is not hiring for any such role. The job seeker in this case stopped communication before any packages were sent, but the incident highlights how easily a real name can be misused.
