Los Angeles City Council members narrowly avoided a financial disaster Wednesday, but the reprieve may be short-lived. A coalition of major airlines and business leaders stormed into emergency negotiations, forcing City Hall to reconsider a sweeping wage hike tied to the 2028 Olympics.
The proposed ordinance would have mandated a dramatic increase in minimum pay for thousands of workers at Los Angeles International Airport and other transit hubs during the Olympic period. City officials estimated the cost at over $100 million, with airlines threatening to reroute flights and cut operations if the measure passed.
Council President Paul Krekorian called the standoff "unprecedented," admitting that the original plan underestimated the economic backlash. "We were staring down a scenario where our own policy could have driven away the very carriers we need to host a successful Games," he said.
Industry representatives argued the wage mandate would cripple competitiveness, forcing airlines to absorb costs or pass them to passengers. One executive described the proposal as a "poison pill" that would make LAX the most expensive airport in the country overnight.
The council has now agreed to a 30-day review, forming a task force with airline officials, labor unions, and tourism boards. Critics warn the delay merely kicks the can down the road, with the Olympics less than four years away. Labor groups, meanwhile, accused the airlines of bullying tactics, vowing to fight any watered-down compromise.
For now, both sides have retreated to negotiate behind closed doors. But the message from the tarmac was clear: City Hall's grand plans come with a price tag, and the airlines are not willing to foot the bill alone.
