Hyde Park residents, business owners recovering after floodwaters take over neighborhood

Heavy rains that swept through the area over the weekend have left Hyde Park under several feet of water, forcing residents from their homes and shuttering local businesses. The sudden deluge overwhelmed drainage systems, turning streets into rivers and flooding basements and ground-floor storefronts within minutes.

For many, the recovery is just beginning. Homeowners spent Monday morning pumping out water and hauling soaked furniture to the curb. The smell of mud and mildew hung heavy in the air as volunteers helped elderly neighbors salvage what they could. One resident described watching the water rise past the first step of her porch, then the second, before she grabbed her cat and waded to higher ground.

Local business owners face a longer road. Several shops along the main strip reported extensive damage to inventory and equipment.
