Tesla has officially set a price target for its highly anticipated autonomous vehicle. CEO Elon Musk announced that the company's forthcoming "Cybercab" robotaxi will be sold for less than $30,000, with a production timeline aiming for before 2027. The announcement coincided with the ceremonial start of production at Tesla's Austin, Texas facility.
The vehicle is designed from the ground up for full autonomy, lacking a traditional steering wheel or pedals. Musk envisions these robotaxis operating within a dedicated network, similar to a ride-hailing service, but owned by individual customers who can add their car to a shared Tesla fleet to generate revenue. This model represents a cornerstone of Tesla's future growth strategy beyond personal vehicle ownership.
The sub-$30,000 price point is seen as a critical factor for widespread adoption and competitiveness in the future of transportation. While regulatory approval for fully driverless operation remains a significant hurdle across many regions, Tesla is moving forward with its manufacturing plans. The company frames the Cybercab as a transformative step towards sustainable and accessible urban mobility, promising to drastically reduce transportation costs for users.
