As someone born and raised in Florida, I believe the best underrated places to visit for culture and nature include St. Augustine and Alachua County. St. Augustine, known as the oldest city in the United States, offers visitors a rich tapestry of history and charm. Its cobblestone streets are lined with centuries-old architecture, and the historic sites, such as the Castillo de San Marcos and the Lightner Museum, provide a glimpse into the past. The vibrant arts scene and delicious local cuisine make it a perfect destination for those looking to immerse themselves in Florida's heritage.
On the other hand, Alachua County is a nature lover's paradise. Home to Gainesville, this area boasts stunning natural landscapes, including the picturesque Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park. Here, visitors can explore diverse ecosystems, spot wildlife, and enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and birdwatching. With its combination of cultural richness and natural beauty, these lesser-known parts of Florida offer an enriching experience away from the bustling crowds.
