Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince has pushed back against the narrative that artificial intelligence is eliminating technology jobs. Instead, he argues, AI is reshaping which roles companies prioritize, and the impact is landing in unexpected places.
Speaking about the current state of tech employment, Prince said AI isn't wiping out engineering or development positions as many fear. Rather, it is reducing demand for certain support and operational roles that were previously considered stable. Companies are reallocating resources toward AI-specific talent, data infrastructure, and product innovation, while cutting back on traditional IT help desk, manual testing, and some administrative tech functions.
Prince pointed out that the real shift is in how businesses value skills. Roles that involve repetitive coding, basic system monitoring, or routine troubleshooting are being automated or downsized. Meanwhile, positions requiring strategic thinking, AI model training, cybersecurity expertise, and creative problem-solving are growing. The CEO emphasized that the total number of tech jobs isn't shrinking, but the mix is changing fast.
He warned that workers who do not adapt risk being left behind, but he also stressed that AI creates new opportunities for those willing to learn. The message is clear: AI isn't the enemy of tech employment. It is a force that forces companies to rethink what they truly need from their teams. For now, the biggest hits are falling on roles that were already becoming obsolete, not on the core engineering talent that builds the future.
