The World Cup is delivering a significant economic boost to local bars and restaurants in Phoenix, with one downtown establishment reporting a 30% jump in overall sales since the tournament began. Soccer fans are packing into pubs across the city, eager to catch matches featuring teams from around the globe, from Brazil to Germany to Japan.
At The George & Dragon, a popular English-style pub in central Phoenix, owner Sarah Mitchell says the energy has been electric. "We are seeing crowds we usually only get for major finals or local derbies," she said. "The early morning matches are particularly busy, with fans showing up before work to watch their home countries play." The pub has extended its hours and added extra staff to handle the surge, especially on weekends when multiple games run back-to-back.
Other venues are reporting similar trends. Bars near Arizona State University's downtown campus have seen a spike in younger crowds, many wearing jerseys from nations like Argentina and France. The increase in foot traffic is also benefiting nearby food trucks and merchandise vendors, who have set up shop outside popular viewing spots.
Local business groups estimate the World Cup could generate millions in revenue for the Phoenix hospitality sector over the tournament's duration. While the U.S. men's team did not qualify this year, fans have embraced the international nature of the event. "It's not just about one country," Mitchell added. "It's about the love of the game. And that is great for business."
