Unlocking SAP Business Context in Databricks with Semantic Metadata Delta Sharing

Integrating SAP Business Data Cloud with Databricks has simplified the process of moving SAP datasets into the Databricks environment through native Delta Sharing. However, simply having the raw data available was not enough. Without the rich business context that defines how that data should be interpreted, users often struggled to make practical sense of it.

That problem has now been solved. SAP Business Data Cloud Delta Shares now automatically sync semantic metadata directly into Unity Catalog. This includes critical information such as column and table descriptions, primary and foreign key relationships, and data governance tags. By bringing this business logic along with the data, the platform ensures that the information is not just accessible, but also understandable.

This metadata synchronization has a direct impact on how users interact with the data. Databricks Genie, the natural language query tool, can now immediately understand the structure and meaning of SAP data. It knows which fields are related, what each column represents, and how to apply governance rules. As a result, users can ask questions in plain language and get accurate, secure answers without needing to manually map out the data schema or guess at field definitions.
