South Korea’s Antitrust Agency Raids Petrochemical Firms in Price-Fixing Probe

South Korea’s Antitrust Agency Raids Petrochemical Firms in Price-Fixing Probe

South Korea's antitrust regulator has launched on-site inspections at four of the nation's largest petrochemical firms as part of a probe into alleged price-fixing activities. The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) confirmed the raids, which targeted companies suspected of colluding to manipulate the prices of key industrial materials.

The investigation focuses on allegations that the firms coordinated pricing strategies for products such as synthetic resins and other petrochemical derivatives, which are widely used in manufacturing plastics, packaging, and automotive components. Industry insiders say the alleged collusion may have inflated costs for downstream businesses and consumers over several years.

The KFTC has not disclosed the names of the companies under investigation, but local media reports suggest they include some of the largest players in South Korea's petrochemical sector. The regulator is reviewing internal documents, emails, and transaction records seized during the raids to determine whether the companies engaged in illegal price coordination.

If found guilty, the firms could face significant fines and potential criminal charges. This is not the first time South Korea's antitrust body has targeted the petrochemical industry. In recent years, the KFTC has imposed heavy penalties on several companies for similar violations, including bid-rigging and price-fixing in the construction and steel sectors.

The probe comes amid growing global scrutiny of corporate pricing practices, particularly in industries where a small number of firms dominate the market. South Korean authorities have been stepping up enforcement actions to ensure fair competition and protect consumers from artificially high prices. The KFTC is expected to release further details of its findings in the coming months.
