Northport's decision to invest nearly $5 million in a new Big Mike's Steakhouse is continuing to draw scrutiny from residents and local business owners. City leaders approved the incentive package earlier this month, arguing the upscale restaurant will bring jobs and foot traffic to the downtown area. But critics say the deal is too generous for a single private business, especially one with no track record in the region.
The package includes land acquisition, infrastructure upgrades, and direct cash incentives. Supporters point to the projected 80 new jobs and the potential to anchor further development. They argue the city has used similar deals before to attract businesses that later became local staples.
Opponents, however, question the return on investment. Some note that the money could have gone toward road repairs, public safety, or small business grants. Others worry about setting a precedent where any new restaurant can demand millions in public funds. A few local restaurateurs have voiced frustration, saying they never received such offers when they opened their doors.
The city council has defended the deal as a calculated risk. They say the steakhouse will fill a vacant lot that has sat empty for years. But with the budget already tight, the debate is far from over. Public meetings on the issue have drawn packed crowds, and several residents have called for a full audit before any money changes hands.
