A recent Caribbean cruise was disrupted by a significant outbreak of norovirus, sickening more than 150 passengers and crew members. The incident occurred aboard the Star Princess, prompting an investigation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The gastrointestinal illness, known for causing vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, spread quickly among those on board. The CDC reported that a total of 153 individuals fell ill during the voyage. In response to the outbreak, the ship’s crew implemented enhanced sanitation procedures. These measures included isolating affected individuals and conducting intensive cleaning and disinfection of all common areas and cabins.
Norovirus is notoriously contagious and can spread easily in close-quarter environments like cruise ships through contaminated surfaces, food, or water. Health officials emphasize that thorough and frequent handwashing with soap and water is the most effective method for preventing infection. The ship has since completed its voyage and returned to port. All passengers have disembarked, and the vessel is undergoing an additional comprehensive cleaning before its next departure.
