John Jumper, the lead scientist behind the Nobel Prize-winning AlphaFold project, has left Google DeepMind after nearly a decade to join Anthropic. The move marks a significant shift in the AI talent landscape, as Jumper was widely seen as a cornerstone of DeepMind's research into protein folding.
Jumper was the driving force behind AlphaFold, an AI system that solved a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology: predicting protein structures from their amino acid sequences. The breakthrough earned him and his colleague Demis Hassabis a share of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Under Jumper's leadership, AlphaFold went from a promising experiment to a tool used by over two million researchers worldwide, accelerating drug discovery and disease research.
At Anthropic, Jumper will focus on developing new AI safety and alignment techniques. The company, founded by former OpenAI researchers, has positioned itself as a leader in building safe, interpretable AI systems. Jumper's departure raises questions about DeepMind's ability to retain top talent as competition for AI experts intensifies. Google DeepMind has not yet announced a replacement for Jumper, but the company said it remains committed to advancing AlphaFold and other scientific AI projects.
