Minority and women-owned businesses in Springfield earned MWBE certificate

More than 20 small, minority, and women-owned businesses in Springfield have successfully obtained their first-round certifications as Small Business/Minority/Women Business Enterprises. This official designation is expected to unlock new opportunities for these local entrepreneurs, allowing them to compete for government contracts and access specialized resources.

The certification process, which involves a rigorous review of business ownership, control, and operations, aims to level the playing field for historically underrepresented groups. For many of these businesses, the approval marks a significant milestone after months of paperwork and preparation.

Local officials highlighted that the program is designed to foster economic growth within the community by directing more spending toward diverse suppliers. Certified businesses can now bid on city and state projects that set aside a portion of work for MWBE firms. This includes contracts in construction, professional services, and supply procurement.

Business owners expressed relief and excitement, noting that the certification provides credibility and a competitive edge. One owner of a catering company said the designation will help her company grow beyond its current customer base. Another, who runs a small construction firm, said he now has a clearer path to larger projects that were previously out of reach.

The city plans to continue offering workshops and application assistance to help more businesses apply in future rounds. The next certification cycle is expected to open later this year.
