One of Australia's most recognizable barbecue retailers, Barbecues Galore, has officially gone into administration, closing dozens of stores nationwide and resulting in the loss of roughly 500 jobs. The chain, which had been a fixture in backyards and suburban shopping centers for almost five decades, was placed into voluntary administration last week. Administrators from KPMG have confirmed that the majority of the company's 90-plus locations will shut down immediately, with only a handful of stores remaining open for a short period to clear out remaining stock.
The collapse marks a stunning end for a brand that many Australians considered an "iconic" part of summer culture. Founded in 1976, Barbecues Galore grew from a single shop into the country's largest specialist barbecue retailer. However, the company struggled in recent years against rising rents, supply chain disruptions, and increased competition from big-box hardware stores and online sellers. The administrators stated that despite efforts to restructure the business and find a buyer, a viable sale could not be completed in time. Customers with outstanding gift cards or warranties have been advised to contact the administrators directly, though recovery of those funds is unlikely. The closure leaves a significant gap in the market and marks the end of an era for Australian grilling enthusiasts.
