A new diagnostic tool aims to give doctors a clearer picture of a patient's heart disease risk by combining genetic data with advanced imaging. The test, developed by Cleerly in partnership with Allelica, is designed to work either on its own or alongside Cleerly's existing AI-powered analysis of coronary CT angiography, or CCTA, scans.
The idea is to catch high-risk patients who might otherwise be overlooked. Standard risk calculators often miss people with a strong family history of heart attacks or those who carry certain genetic variants. By layering a polygenic risk score onto the structural data from a CT scan, the new test can flag patients whose arteries may look normal but who still face a heightened chance of a cardiac event.
Cleerly's AI system already evaluates CCTA images to measure plaque buildup and narrowing in the coronary arteries. Adding the genetic component gives clinicians a second data point, which could help them decide whether to start aggressive statin therapy or recommend lifestyle changes earlier. The companies say the combined approach may be especially useful for patients considered borderline risk under current guidelines.
The test is now available for clinical use in the United States. Both firms are positioning it as a way to move beyond one-size-fits-all heart disease screening toward more personalized prevention strategies.
