San Antonio police have arrested a man accused of repeatedly slamming a kitten against a counter inside a business on the city's Northeast Side, with the alleged abuse taking place in view of a police officer.
According to an arrest affidavit, the incident unfolded when an officer responded to a disturbance call at a commercial location. Upon arrival, the officer witnessed the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Michael Torres, grabbing a small kitten and forcefully striking it against a countertop multiple times. The affidavit states the officer immediately intervened and detained Torres.
Witnesses at the scene told police they had seen Torres mistreat the animal earlier, including throwing it and hitting it. The kitten, described as a young domestic shorthair, was taken to a local veterinary clinic for treatment. Officials said the animal suffered injuries but was expected to survive.
Torres was booked into the Bexar County Jail on a charge of cruelty to non-livestock animals, a felony in Texas. The charge carries potential penalties of up to two years in prison and a fine. Court records show Torres has a prior criminal history, though details were not immediately available.
Animal welfare advocates have condemned the act, urging the public to report suspected abuse. The case is set to proceed through the criminal justice system, with a hearing expected in the coming weeks.
